Hi There
Hope everyone had a fantastic Easter break and made the most of the long weekend. It's always great to have back-to-back long weekends to recharge the batteries.
Of course, this has given me time to think about a few things, and today I want to talk about 'holding two opposing thoughts at once'.
Politics, the media (social and otherwise) and general discourse has become so utterly polarised that it's almost considered 'wrong' to think about things from more than one point of view. But, reality is never as black and white as we'd like.
For instance, both of the following are true:
- People who work in industry super funds are working really hard, and doing their very best to deliver great outcomes for members.
- Some industry super funds have let down their members quite considerably with regards to governance, death benefits and insurance claims.
If you work in retail super, it's easy to only see the second and forget the first. But there are now many people who've moved from retail to industry and know full well that the first is true too!
Here's another one, more personal this time:
- I have sung in a number of Anzac Day dawn services. It's important to remember the horrors of war and honour those who serve.
- I am staunchly anti-war and worry that patriotism can overshadow critical thinking with sometimes devastating consequences.
With Anzac Day this Friday, I would encourage you to take a minute to consider where there is opportunity to have more nuanced discourse when it comes to complex topics. Lots of small conversations add up to real change.
Lest we forget.
Cheers
Sarah
