Hi There

It's freezing cold today in Sydney, so I'm in a nice warm office. Winning!

Big news this week with the announcement that Shemara Wikramanayake will step down as Chief Executive of Macquarie after eight years at the helm and nearly four decades at Macquarie - read more here.

I was so delighted when Shemara got the job. She is an absolute powerhouse. It will be very interesting to see if her successor can fill the huge gap she is leaving.

Cheers

Sarah

THOUGHT OF THE WEEK

What tomatoes can teach us about DDO

The Four Corners episode on Monday night looked at the provenance of tinned tomatoes and (using isotope testing) found that many labelled "Australian" were actually from China. When approached, the companies vigorously denied it, pointing to all the correct assurances they had in place.

Which brings me to DDO. We've taken the same approach across the industry, all the assurances in place. But if someone used a similarly scientific approach, what would they uncover? Would they find that the right products are in the hands of the right consumers?

It is absolutely possible to use big data to scientifically demonstrate whether or not your products are in the hands of the right consumers, but almost no one is doing it.

So frankly it's no surprise that what ASIC is now looking for is active monitoring, to check those assurances are worth the paper they're written on.

If you're interested in removing the pain of monitoring and using big data instead, we should talk.

WHO IS ACCOUNTABLE FOR AI-GENERATED DECISIONS?

Screenshot 2026-07-23 at 10.50.39 am

AI is making more decisions, but humans are still the ones left explaining them. New research shows employees rarely pass on AI outputs untouched - they tweak, soften or add context along the way. That invisible layer of human judgment can build trust, create friction or quietly send AI off the rails. If organisations want AI to work well, they need people who can question it, interpret it and not treat explainability like a compliance box to tick. Great read in HBR here.
